Dear Senator:
On behalf of our 3 million members and the 50 million students they serve, we urge you to VOTE NO on the Stop Insider Trading Act (H.R. 7008). Votes on this issue may be included in NEA’s report card for the 119th Congress.
H.R. 7008 is a Trojan horse—an attack on voting rights disguised as an effort to address an unrelated issue. We have no position on the underlying bill, but strongly oppose the voting provisions. H.R. 7008 incorporates elements of the so-called SAVE Act, the voter-suppression bill aiming to “solve” a problem that does not exist: rampant voting by people who are not U.S. citizens. The real goal is to lower turnout among particular groups, including voters of color, younger voters, low-income voters, and voters with disabilities.
H.R. 7008 would also end nearly all mail-in voting despite bipartisan opposition to the move; both Republican and Democratic governors have vetoed similar legislation.
The House has already voted on the SAVE Act and the Senate has rejected it repeatedly. Holding yet another vote is playing politics, and is unacceptable.
Please VOTE NO on Stop Insider Trading Act.
