Talk with students about the inheritances Lucy receives throughout the novel. What do people inherit that cannot be written in a will? What does Lucy discover she has inherited beyond Nowhere and the Sanders fortune? Discuss how Lucy’s relationships, experiences, and connection to place shape her understanding of herself and her future.

Ask students to tell the story of an inheritance of their own—not about property or possessions, but about something they have received from the people, places, or experiences that have shaped their lives. Where did the inheritance come from, how did it become part of their lives, and how does it influence the way they see the world? Encourage students to consider both intentional gifts and quieter inheritances, including habits, beliefs, and lessons they learned through observation and experience.

• Why do you think Mr. Sanders lied to Lucy about knowing her father? Why is learning about her father so important to Lucy? What kind of courage does it take to look at the past?
• How does the power and responsibility Lucy has after she inherits Nowhere influence her choices and decision-making? How does that change how Lucy thinks about her future? What responsibilities do you think come with making decisions that affect other people’s lives?
• How do you explain the bond and interactions Lucy has with the sea wolves? How does Lucy decide what to believe when she encounters things she can’t explain? What is something you have experienced that changed the way you looked at the world?
