Songbird in the Light

After reading Songbird in the Light, get students talking about all the things that make each of us special. How does the boy in the book shine? How do they shine? Then give students their own chance to shine in a class showcase!

Invite students to prepare to present something: a song, dance, drawing, craft, sports skill, cooking demonstration, collection, hobby, or anything else that shows a part of who they are. Give students a choice in how they participate so that they feel comfortable. Some may choose to perform, while others may display a collection, record and share a short video, or have an adult or classmate help present. Encourage students to both share something that brings them joy and to be part of an audience for their classmates that celebrates the excitement and pride others feel when they share something they love.

Your showcase can be just for your class or include student families to create a larger celebration of the many voices, talents, and experiences that make your classroom community special.

Questions for Discussion or Reflective Writing

• How does singing make the boy feel? When does he feel most free to sing and be himself?
• How is the way he is treated by his classmates make him feel about being himself and sharing his voice? Why does he wish he could be a songbird at school too?
• What does the boy’s mother mean when she calls him her “songbird”? How does her love and encouragement help him understand something special about himself?
• How does Ms. Irene help the boy find the courage to sing? How does it feel when someone notices something wonderful about you and encourages you to share it?
• How do the birds in the illustrations help tell the story? What else do you notice about the birds in the pictures?
• What changes for the boy when he decides to share his voice with others?
