We Are Definitely Human

When a trio of strangers crashes in the yard of Mr. and Mrs. Li, they maintain they are just ordinary earthlings looking for help.

Kindness is not just an individual action but a community value—something we practice together to make our spaces feel like home for everyone. Share We Are Definitely Human with students to emphasize the importance of practicing kindness wherever we go and with everyone we meet! Then build on this message by hosting a community-building Read Across America event that celebrates kindness and connection, and opens opportunities to welcome new perspectives, learn from and help one another, and have fun together.

Include a read-aloud of We Are Definitely Human at your event, along with a variety of kindness-focused activities, such as:

  • A station for students, families, and community members to make kindness bookmarks filled with encouraging messages for fellow readers
  • A postcard-writing table where participants can send outer space–themed notes of support to local hospitals, shelters, or other community spaces where individuals might need a boost
  • A photo booth with space-themed props and “welcome” signs in all the languages spoken across your community
  • A book drive to collect gently used books to share with others in need of reading material
  • A shared potluck meal where everyone brings a favorite dish to contribute—because generosity is delicious

And of course, dancing—“because it’s fun!” as Mrs. Li says.

Questions for Discussion or Reflective Writing

  1. What does X. Fang’s use of bold color draw your attention to in the illustrations?
  2. Why do the visitors tell Mr. Li that they are definitely human? How does Mr. Li react to this information?
  3. What does it mean to be a kind human? What are ways Mr. and Mrs. Li and other community members show kindness and welcome the visitors? What are some ways you can welcome newcomers to your classroom, school, or community?
  4. When have you done something kind for someone else? How did it make you feel?
  5. What did the three visitors learn from the humans? How do you imagine them using what they learned?
  6. Do you think that Mr. Li suspected all along that the visitors were not from Europe?
