Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. achieved much more than a “having a dream”… he was the ultimate strategist, empowering marginalized groups to make the dream of equality a reality.
Continuing that legacy is iconic community activist and mentor Emanuel “Dupree” Jackson, Jr..
Through the founding of his Emanuel Jackson Senior (EJS) Project, Dupree has made hands-on advocacy for youth in his hometown of Delray Beach, Florida, his life’s mission.
Named after his late father, who instilled in him the value of education and service, Jackson’s EJS Project is recognized as one of the most vital youth engagement programs in the state.
By creating forums for young people to have honest conversations around issue that affect their personal growth, exposing them to the importance of history and current events, and socio-political work in their communities, EJS continues Dr. King’s mission to uplift a people.
For over a decade Jackson’s EJS Project has provided 5,000 Palm Beach County teens with academic tutoring, workshops that provide mental health support, and career prep that include paid internships. EJS not only gives young people a sense of worth, but strategies for making a positive impact on the future of those around them of all ages.
Jackson keeps youth involved in City Commission meetings, and interfacing with the Delray Beach Police Department, bringing them face-to-face with civic and business leaders. By creating safe spaces for candid dialogue about issues of race, equity, and inclusion, Emanuel Jackson is inspiring those from all walks of life to advocate for themselves… and believe there are no limits.
The EJS Project’s Purpose Pays program offers young people between the ages 14–18 compensated work and professional skill development, earning $2,100 over eight weeks. Learning about teamwork, initiative, and project management demonstrate that economic, education, and cooperative engagement are the keys to social justice.
Emanuel’s reputation for caring deeply about the young people in his community knows no bounds. He organizes neighborhood beatification projects, sponsors afterschool tutoring sessions, and organizes trips to promote knowledge of history and African American culture, providing many teens their first opportunity to travel. Dupree Jackson embodies on a daily basis his credo for service and empowerment… “Bout Dat Action”.
Emanuel Jackson, Jr. couldn’t be more worthy of an honor that bears the name of the iconic “Warrior for Social Justice”, leading his troops of heroic youth to defeat the obstacles of intolerance… earning the victory of equity for all.
